Supplies and Materials
During the summer, many shared class supplies (such as specific yarn requested by instructor) are included in tuition.  If a class uses a large volume of supplies or special materials, a studio fee may be assessed.  You will be notified in advance on the student materials list if a studio fee greater than $50 is expected.

Some materials are considered hazardous or require special handling/disposal, therefore a hazardous waste disposal cost may be included in addition to the studio fee. Please refer to the student materials list for specifics about materials needed for class.

*Please note: During concentration, shared supplies are not included in tuition.

The studio stocks a selection of yarn such as cotton, rayon, wool, chenille, linen, etc. The yarn selection is determined by instructors request for classes and is sold by the studio assistant during scheduled times.

Toolkits
A weaving tool kit may be signed out first come, first served. The kit includes 2 boat shuttles( 1 small, 1 large), bobbins, reed hook, measuring tape, scissors, snips, tapestry beater, and a small pick-up stick. The student is responsible for any lost items and will be ask to pay a fee.

Classroom
The studio is located on the 2nd floor of the Lily Loom House (sorry, it is accessible by staircase only). The overhead lights are full spectrum fluorescent. The studio is equipment is list above. A washer and dryer are located on the third floor and is to be shared with the other textile studio. The building is heated, but not air-conditioned. Smoking is not permitted in the building: cigarette breaks involve a flight of stairs and a trip outside. The third floor has one shared bathroom and the ground floor has two (there is no bathroom on the second floor).

Student Workspace
Students are provided a loom with a bench or stool, a table, a clamp-on desk lamp w/ full spectrum bulbs. Students are welcome to bring favorite personal hand tools for use in the studio. Lock able space is not available for student use in the studio. Lockers are available elsewhere on campus for a refundable fee.

Safety Information
There is a mandatory safety walk through at the beginning of every class. The walk through is to introduce you to the studio space and to show you the safety equipment. A first aid kit, 3 fire extinguishers, a fire blanket and an eyewash station, are provided in the studio.

North Carolina Health regulations do not permit us to provide medically fitted respirators, dust masks, gloves, aprons, and other safety equipment for shared use-please bring your own protective gear from home. Please refer to the student materials list for specifics about safety gear needed for the class.

Alcohol is not permitted in the studios. Working in the studios under the influence of alcohol is not permitted. The use of illegal drugs at Penland School is prohibited.

Shared Studio Equipment
If you wish to use equipment in other studios during your session, you must work with the instructor, studio assistant or coordinator of that studio to arrange access.  They will determine if the desired usage is compatible with their class activities, and if you are able to work safely and independently with the equipment.

Besides shared equipment, it is important to note that the Weaving/textile studio your class is in is a shared space. The whole class is asked to participate in a weekly clean-up session and a FINAL clean-up at the end of the class. During the summer, the final clean up occurs on the next-to-last day of class--it is scheduled before the auction that evening and before Show & Tell on the last day of class. During concentration, the final clean up occurs on the last Thursday and it is an all day affair. Everyone must participate in clean-up, so if you must leave early, ask the studio assistant to assign you clean up tasks you could accomplish before your departure.
