Penland Drawing and Painting Studio Information
Equipment
This list of equipment is intended to give you an idea about what the studio is like. Keep in mind that although we do have this equipment, if something is not necessary for your class it may not be prepared for use. The equipment used by your class will be determined by your instructor, and will be appropriate to the techniques covered in your class. This is a general description of equipment, and may change before your session. The studio is equipped with9 old drafting tables 24" x 36"
9 old office chairs
9 aluminum easels
9 storage units (non-closable or lockable)
9 clamp-on desk lamps w/ full spectrum bulbs
masonite boards in assorted sizes
8 large fold-out tables
overhead projector (shared w/ other Northlight studios)
flat files
1 square fan
some extension cords.Supplies and Materials
Many shared class supplies (such as gesso, acrylic mediums, and brush cleaning solvents) are included in tuition. If a class uses a large volume of supplies, special materials, or/and a sub-contracted figure model, a studio fee may be assessed. You will be notified in advance on the student materials list if a studio fee of greater than $50 is expected. Some materials are considered hazardous or require special handling/disposal; therefore a hazardous waste disposal cost may be included in addition to the studio fee. Please refer to the student materials list for specifics about materials needed for the class.
In order to reduce waste, paper towels are NOT provided, so please plan to bring 3-4 cotton towels for your personal use. If you feel the need to use paper towels, please bring enough rolls for the duration of your session
Classroom and Student Workspace
Drawing and painting classes are held in the studio on the second floor of the Northlight Building. Weather permitting-the class may extend itself out on the Northlight porch. The studio is lit with full spectrum fluorescent lighting and we provide students with a clamp-on desk lamp w/ full spectrum bulbs for individual work areas. The studio has a sink, an oily rag waste can, and a flammable cabinet.
Students are provided with a drafting table and/or an easel, a clamp-on desk lamp, and a non-lockable storage unit to hold their drawing and painting supplies. Students are welcome to bring favorite personal hand tools for use in the studio.
If you have specific lighting or seating needs, you will want to bring what you need with you.Storage
Flat files are available in studio to house student's paper and drawings. There is no lockable space for student's personal belongings-you may want to bring a lockable toolbox. Lockers are available elsewhere on campus for a refundable fee.Safety Information
- A first aid kit and fire extinguisher are available in the studio. The nearest phone is in the neighboring wood or glass studio. All flammable solvents can be housed in the small flammable cabinet. Flameproof cans are provided to collect hazardous waste, such as rags used with mineral spirits or other solvents.
- North Carolina Health regulations does not permit Penland to provide safety equipment for shared use, therefore items such as dust masks, respirators, gloves, aprons are not provided, but are sold in the supply store. You may prefer to bring your own from home. Please refer to your instructor's material list for specifics about safety equipment needed for the class
- There is a mandatory safety walk through at the beginning of every class. The walk through is to introduce you to the studio space and to show you the safety equipment.
- Alcohol is not permitted in the studios. Working in the studios under the influence of alcohol is not permitted. The use of illegal drugs at Penland is prohibited.
Shared Studio Equipment
If you wish to use equipment in other studios during your session, you must work with the instructor, studio assistant or coordinator of that studio to arrange access. They will determine if the desired usage is compatible with their class' activities, and if you are able to work safely and independently with the equipment.Besides shared equipment, it is important to note that the studio your class is in is a shared space. The whole class is asked to participate in a weekly clean-up session and a FINAL clean up at the end of the class. During the summer, the final clean up occurs on Thursday afternoon the second week of class (Tuesday evening for 5th session; Friday evening for 7th session)-it is scheduled before the session auction that evening and before show and tell on the last day of class. Everyone must participate-so if you must leave early ask the studio assistant to assign you clean up tasks you could accomplish before your departure.
