Excellence in Teaching Workshop

May 20 - 24, 2008

A special opportunity for artists interested in understanding teaching and learning
and how to become more effective teachers themselves.

As an artist, you have traveled a complex path, specific to your experience in the world and its expression in your work. Teaching your art to someone else invites you to recover the path you have taken as you work to understand how your students approach your craft. Each morning of this workshop, you will work with a master teaching artist. In the afternoons the group will gather to analyze the morning’s shared experience of teaching and learning with an emphasis on how each participant can apply this experience to their own teaching.

The topics we expect to address in our discussions include the following: understanding the novice; dealing with with self-consciousness; the discipline of art and the freedom of self-expression; balancing technique and content; finding entry ways into the work; generative criticism; fostering and aesthetic community.

The workshop begins with orientation on Tuesday evening and concludes with lunch on Saturday.

Cost: $175 (includes materials, housing, and meals)
Limited to 20 participants who will be selected by lottery. Application deadline, April 18.

Application form (PDF). Print and mail or fax to Penland.

If you have questions, contact Natalie Tornatore at communityeducation@penland.org or 828-765-8060.
