Penland School of Crafts is offering a great opportunity to work independently in the teaching studios through the winter rental program. This page explains the terms for renting studio space. Prices per studio are listed below.
Winter rental application form (Word document)
Rental periods are:
Week 1: January 27 – February 1
Week 2: February 3 – February 8
Week 3: February 10 – February 15
Week 4: February 17 – February 22
Weekly rates are $160.00 for studio rental and $130.00 for housing rental.
Applications are due by December 1. If space remains after December 1, we will continue to accept applications until the beginning of each rental period.
Those renting for more than one week must include a $150 deposit with the application. The deposit will be applied to the rental balance. Note: Glass students do not send a rental deposit; rent is due in full the day of rental.
Applicants will be notified by December 17 if their application has been accepted. The full balance is due by December 31.
On campus housing is available in our recently completed (and as yet unnamed) new housing building during each winter rental session with a full common-use kitchen available. Limited meal service will be available in the campus coffee house. Housing will be available after 4:00 p.m. on the first day of the rental period (which is a Sunday). Renters will have access to the studio on Monday morning.

Rental Requirements and Restrictions
Renters who have never worked in a Penland studio must provide three letters of reference or detailed curriculum vitae of craft experience with their application. References are not necessary for past students and instructors. Studio coordinators must approve all renters.
Studio rental includes access to equipment ONLY. Renters are required to pay for materials used in the production of work. Studio rental does not include technical instruction. Renters must be qualified to work safely and independently in the studio. A required studio safety tour will be conducted by the studio coordinator prior to studio use.
Individuals assisting renters must be renters also and will be required to submit an application and rental fees. The only exception is in hot glass, where the rental rate is for the bench and an assistant is not charged for studio use.
Renters may not use equipment or materials in the studio if they have not been fully trained to use the equipment or materials. Use of any studio equipment must be approved by the studio coordinator. Renters must understand that they will be responsible for replacing any studio equipment that is damaged or destroyed due to their negligence, misuse, or abuse.
Studio renters must agree to participate in studio cleanup managed by the studio coordinator before moving out of the studio.
Renters are not allowed to bring pets to Penland.
Renters will be asked to read and abide by the Penland Student Handbook.
Penland School reserves the right to terminate a rental agreement for unsuitable behavior considered harmful to studios, housing, or community life.
