Kids Camp 2012

Summer art camps
offer creative and engaging one-week workshops for children ages 3 to 18, taught by local artists in the Ridgeway Building across from the Penland Gallery. Half-day ($95) and full-day ($190) camps include materials and snacks. Some scholarships are available.
Schedule
Udu Drums, Whistles, and Other Instruments in Clay
with Katrina Plato and Joe Arnold
June 4, 1:30–4:30 PM
Ages 12-18
Let’s make music! We will learn basic handbuilding techniques to make ancient instruments from clay including an African Udu drum and South American clay whistle. We will personalize our instruments with glaze or decoration before firing them to be taken home to play. Additional materials fee: $5
Katrina has taught in Mitchell County Schools for five years. Joe Arnold is a flute player. He co-created musical instruments from clay with Katrina for two years in public schools and taught at Camp Spring Creek in Bakersville in 2011.
Insects in Action
with Christine Henry
June 11–15, 9:00 AM–Noon
Ages 3–6
We will combine art, stories, music, and movement to create a fun and educational experience that’s all about insects. We will make wearable wings and playful puppets while learning about beetles, butterflies, and bugs!
Christine has taught many Kids Camp classes and for TRAC’s Enhanced Arts in the Preschools program. She is a glass artist and teaches at Spruce Pine Montessori School.

Around the World in Arty Ways
with Christine Henry
June 11–15, 1:30–4:30 PM
Ages 7–11
Come on a fun-filled art adventure around the world! We will explore unique art forms from different countries and learn about other cultures as well. We will travel to Mexico to make papier mâché masks; in Egypt we will make our own mummy and sarcophagus; in China we will learn about paper making; other globetrotting fun will take us to other places! No passport required, just your imagination.

Beginning Sewing
with Wendi Gratz
June 18–22, 9:00 AM–Noon
Ages 8 and up
Want to learn how to use a needle and thread? A sewing machine? Your imagination? We’ll be putting them all to work in this beginning sewing class. You’ll learn some basic sewing and embroidery skills and then get busy making stuffed monsters, beastly bean bags, toothy tote bags, superhero masks, villainous eye-patches, and more. If you can imagine it, you can sew it!
Wendi is a studio artist and has taught crafts to kids at Penland’s Kids Camp, Spruce Pine Montessori School, and several bookstores.
Stop-Motion Claymation Movies
with Katrina Plato
June 18–22, 1:30–4:30 PM
Ages 12–18
Lights, camera, action! Learn how to create your own short movie through digital photo animation. After deciding on a theme, we will take hundreds of single photos and use iMovie to make a short film. We will put our movies to music, and at the end of the camp we will have a film festival.
Katrina has taught middle school art in Mitchell County for five years. Her eighth grade students had a memorable experience producing iMovies last spring after she took a class for teachers from Penland’s own Mark Boyd.
Mad Cap Capers
with True Kelly
June 25–29, 9:00 AM–Noon
Ages 6 and up
Here’s calling all clowns to continue on the path of “heyoka” magic, marching to the tune of bells, whistles, and drums. We’ll create our own clown alley with traditional and original gags. Come back on July 4th to show off the skills you picked up with a public performance in the Penland parade.
True Kelly has led workshops and guided art groups for decades. She is a certified art instructor in North Carolina. Her expansive collection of folk art is part of her ongoing inspiration as an artist.
Mad Scientist Camp

Ages 8 and up
Grab your lab coats and put on your safety goggles because things are going to get messy. We’re going to make concoctions that bubble, fizz, pop, smoke, change colors, and maybe even explode! Join us for some science experiments that will blow your mind. Additional materials fee: $15

Act Up! Summer Theater Workshop
with Dr. William Eyerly
July 2–6, 9:00 AM–4:30 PM (full day)
Ages 8–12
Let’s get theatrical! In this class we will learn everything from “Whose Line is it Anyway?” improvisation games and skits to creating costumes and props. At the end of the week we will produce our own performance for family and friends.
Dr. William Eyerly is the Executive Director for the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts, and Performing Arts Director at Oak Hall School in Gainesville, FL. He teaches, writes, acts, and directs professionally and has advanced degrees in both theater and education.

I Never FELT So Good
with Kerstin Davis
July 9–13, 9:00 AM–Noon
Ages 9 and up
You’ll be feeling good after learning basic wool felting techniques in this camp. We’ll hand-felt over objects, creating finger puppets, interesting pockets, and paper weights. We’ll flat-felt dyed roving into colorful sheets of felt that we will use to embellish our creations with stitchery and appliqué. Let the washing machine do the dirty work in the creation of your own juggling balls and pincushions. Toward the end of the week, needle felting will unfold the potential to create little animal creatures and 3-d sculptures in wool fiber. There’s no end to the variety you can create with these simple techniques. Don’t be sheepish, come join in on the fun!

Mix it up all week in this mixed media painting camp. Let’s paint HUMONGOUSLY BIG in our exploration of colorful watercolor dye with wax resist, ink, tempera, and acrylic while experimenting with texture, masking, and simple printmaking techniques. We’ll be movin’ and groovin’ to the music, incorporating expressive line drawing into our paintings with graphite, water-soluble crayons and pastels. We’ll then cut up and paste some of our experimental paintings in the creation of something completely different. Oh yeah, this is gonna be fun... Dress for a mess!

Let’s Tell a Story Through Pictures and Words

Ages 9–12
Do you love to read? Love to imagine? Love to make pictures and art? Let’s mash it up to create a story with characters, setting, and adventures! We’ll finish with a reading and display of your masterpiece. Bring your favorite books for inspiration.

Cherokee to Yurok: The Ways of the American Indian
with Sherry Lovett
July 23–27, 9:00 AM–Noon
Ages 8–12
Explore Native American culture and the beauty of nature through art, music, stories, and games. We will be engaged in active, hands-on learning and fun through a variety of activities such as creating a shield, making a coup stick, learning Cherokee and Lakota chants, making a whale rattle in honor of the Haida, hearing traditional stories, taking nature walks, and playing games.
Sherry is a teacher and a professional storyteller who has taught many art and storytelling camps in a variety of programs including Kids Camp 2011.

Batik! Get Waxed!

July 23–27, 1:30–4:30 PM
Ages 14–18
Using the ancient Indian method of painting with hot wax and dye, we will create pieces for framing, pillows, T-shirts, and a tote bag. Bold color, wild imagination, and laughter will fuel our creativity. Additional materials fee: $10

Then print it out out, fill out the appropriate form, and return it to Penland.
All applications received by March 30 will be placed in a lottery for available spaces. After the lottery, spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum enrollment is 12 children per camp. If low enrollment forces a cancellation, we will notify you three weeks ahead of time and you will receive a full refund.
Cost
Half-day camps are $95; full-day camps are $190. Camp tuition includes materials and snacks (several camps have additional materials fees, which are listed at the end of the description). Payment is due with registration. Some scholarships are available - see Applications for details.
Location
All camps will be held in Ridgeway Hall, across the road from the Penland Gallery.
Other Important Stuff
A liability/health/pick-up authorization form must be signed and returned by the first day of camp. If registering for more than one camp, only one form is needed per student.
If your child has physical limitations the teacher needs to be aware of (including allergies), you must indicate this on the liability/health/pick-up form and speak to the instructor on the first day of class.
Penland School of Crafts receives support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
