Penland sponsors several programs that make the school's resources available to the local community.

The Teaching Artist Initiative provides art programs in the Mitchell County schools and helps artists develop their teaching skills.

Creative Approaches to Subsitute Education

Community Open House

Each year, Penland's community open house welcomes hundreds of visitors into the studios for demonstrations and hands-on activities. The 2012 community open house will take place on Saturday, March 3, from 1-5 pm.

Kids Camp

June 11 - July 27, 2012

Summer art camps offer Creative and engaging one week workshops for children ages 3 to 18, taught by local artists in the Ridgeway Building across from the Penland Gallery. Half-day ($95) and full-day ($190) camps include materials and snacks. Some scholarships are available.

Community Collaborations

Penland staff members are involved in many community events each year, designing hands-on activities that are offered free to the public.

 

Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival

Saturday April 28th, 2012, 10pm – 4pm

Locust Street, Downtown Spruce Pine, NC

Spruce Pine Main Street and Penland School of Crafts present the annual Fire On the Mountain festival, to celebrate blacksmithing's deep roots in Western North Carolina, and broaden awareness of quality contemporary iron work. Experience a day of forging techniques and ferrous materials!
