Donate your old, broken, unstylish or unloved jewelry and see it transformed into radically new jewelry at Penland School of Crafts this summer.
Radical Jewelry Makeover is a fun, informed project that uses donated jewelry and a variety of design strategies to create an alternative to traditional mining practices and jewelry production. It provides an opportunity to address the social and environmental impacts of irresponsible mining and focuses attention on the skills and creativity of metalsmiths.

This was a donation to the Viriginia
Radical Jewelry Makeover.
The fourth "edition" of Radical Jewelry Makeover (RJM), Ethical Metalsmiths' traveling community mining, recycling, redesign and education project, will take place in Penland, North Carolina, from June 21 to July 2, 2009. Metalsmithing students in the workshop (taught by Susie Ganch and Christina Miller) will transform donations into exciting new jewelry, some of which will be available for sale, and the proceeds will benefit Ethical Metalsmiths.
This is how it works. Everyone is invited to "mine" their homes, "uncovering" gold, silver, and other jewelry, that is no longer used and deposit (donate) their "lode." All donors will receive discount coupons and the discount value (max. $50) will be determined by the precious material content of the donations. Your coupon can be applied to the purchase of a piece of redesigned jewelry.
To take part, please fill out the PDF donation form and include it inside a bag/box/wheelbarrow with your jewelry. Make sure you cut off the bottom portion of the form and keep it for your records!
