Curator's Statement

Makers Without Borders honors the work of twelve accomplished artists working in wood sculpture and furniture forms. These artists were selected for their dedication to the pursuit of truly singular and authentic paths of discovery throughout their careers. In addition to contributing work to the exhibit, they were asked to invite into the mix a colleague who has contributed significantly to their creative growth and life. The resulting exhibition of work by twenty-four remarkable individuals represents a pinnacle of original artistic achievement and presents a celebration of the relationships so vital to sustained optimism and creativity.

The work of the original twelve artists selected for the exhibit varies greatly in scale, form, materials and content. Their diverse bodies of work have in common foundations of technical excellence, richness of personal expression, revealing evidence of continued risk-taking, determination and experimentation. Project upon project, year after year, they have relentlessly moved beyond the borders of pre-existing forms and traditions to define a new order of structure and conceptual content based on their evolving understanding of themselves and the world they experience.

While these artists’ accomplishments are the result of sustained discipline and focus from within each individual, their efforts have been supported by the generosity and compassion of colleagues: family members, teachers, students, and fellow artists. They have been encouraged by those who believe in their search, even when it has been represented by no more than a sketch, a gesture, an inkling. In reaching out beyond the borders of their own perceptions to compatriots whose advice they welcome and views they respect, these artists have opened their minds to new possibilities and points of view. Their work has been enriched and inspired by creative relationships, and has consequently evolved far beyond the limitations of their own imagination.

Our hope is that the viewer of this exhibition will be inspired to follow their own intuition in pursuit of their authentic artistic voice, and embrace the richness of ideas and support so available and invaluable in their respective communities.

While making art can be a challenging and sometimes difficult way to earn a living, it is a great life. Making art provides a path for evolving self-awareness and can lead one to experience the most wonderful of connections with others: that of shared creative vision.

My sincere gratitude goes to Kathryn Gremley, Penland’s gallery manager, for guiding the planning and execution of Makers Without Borders with her thoroughness, thoughtfulness and most excellent humor.
