About the Penland Drawing and Painting Studios

Session 1--May 25-June 6

Bob Nulf--Trompe l’Oeil Painting
From the walls of Pompeii to those in regal estates and stately cathedrals, from early American itinerant artists’ murals to exquisite contemporary faux finishes, this class will explore the traditions of painting various wood, stone, marble, and metallic finishes. We will then apply these techniques in creating realistic trompe l’oeil effects. We will start by painting on polypropylene boards; some students may then move on to painting on objects while others may wish to pursue multi-layered trompe l’oeil illusions. Drawing skills will help, but this class is open to all levels. Code 01d

Session 2--June 8-20

Denyce Celentano--Figure Drawing
This workshop will help students gain the basic skills of drawing the human form from observation, using gesture, contour, and modeling. Students will gain a greater understanding of picture making methods by studying the placement of the figure in the composition and the use of tonal values. All levels. Code 02d

Session 3--June 22-July 4

Robert Johnson--Nature Journaling: Art for Nature Freaks
Nature journaling is a powerful tool for connecting with the world around us, and it can inspire work in any medium. This class will travel to some of the most beautiful spots in the North Carolina mountains where we will observe and record what we find using Robert Johnson’s unique pencil and watercolor journaling method. No previous experience necessary; all that is needed is curiosity, a love of nature, and a good pair of hiking boots. All levels. Code 03d

Session 4--July 6-18

McArthur Freeman--The Figure in Space
This workshop will explore both traditional and experimental approaches to drawing the figure. The first week will focus on traditional drawing techniques, anatomy, analysis of gesture, shape, and solidity of form. The second week will focus on the experimental creation of multi-character compositions staged in an environment. We will emphasize creative play, perspective and spatial relationships, selective lighting, and two-dimensional composition. All levels. Code 04d
