Development and Communications Intern

Position Summary

The development and communications intern is an important member of the development team, providing administrative support and learning about the roles of each staff member. He or she will gain valuable knowledge and experience in fundraising for nonprofits including annual campaign and special project fundraising, prospect research, data management and use of Raiser’s Edge software, relationship building and stewardship, and solicitation. The intern will also provide administrative support to the communications manager several hours each week, learning how Penland uses publications, marketing, and electronic communications.The internship period is late May through early August, full time (minimum of 14 weeks at 30-40 hours/week). The development and communications intern reports to the annual fund manager.

Responsibilities

Development
Assist with the annual donor appeal program including mailings and donor calls.


Assist with planning, set-up, and/or management of special events such as Penland Friends parties, scholarship auctions, the Annual Benefit Auction, and other donor cultivation/stewardship events.


Conduct prospect and foundation research.


Assist with maintenance of the donor database (Raiser’s Edge), i.e. creating and updating records.


Provide writing and/or editing support for the quarterly donor newsletter, reports, and other correspondence.


Attend relevant departmental and board committee meetings, record meeting minutes if applicable
Conduct clerical and administrative duties such as data entry, filing, copying, etc.

 

Communications

Help manage and catalog digital images for publications.


Record campus life by writing stories for our blog.


Conduct research on outlets for internet promotion.


Depending on dates of internship, assist with publications in progress, ex. Annual Benefit Auction catalog, Annual Report, class catalogs, etc.

 

Qualifications

A demonstrated interest in the arts/arts management.


Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, strong command of mail merging is a plus.


Excellent verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and self-motivated.


Comfortable making phone calls to supporters.


Some working knowledge of online research.


Emotional maturity, self confidence, and a sense of humor.


A proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of individuals.


Past experience with development office work is preferred but not required. Please indicate whether you have experience with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge fundraising software.


For communications, knowledge of Photoshop, Lightroom, and/or Quark are a plus.

Physical Demands

This position requires the applicant walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, reach above their head, have use of fine and gross motor skills, and work in close quarters. The applicant must have normal visual acuity at near and far distance with correction and hear the spoken word with correction. The applicant must be fluent in English. The position demands frequent exposure to inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the applicant is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The applicant is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls and to talk fluently. The applicant must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

Compensation

All housing and meals will be provided to the intern for the duration of the internship period.
