Penland Gallery & Visitors Center, Gallery Sales/Information Associate
The Gallery Sales and Information Associate is responsible for greeting and assisting incoming students, instructors, and visitors, and providing information about Penland School, gallery artists, and local studios to gallery visitors. The position requires a service-oriented person who is able to relay information to visitors, students, and instructors in a friendly, courteous, tactful and accurate manner. This position is also responsible as the primary contact for tour inquiries and tour guides, and maintains tour book information, scheduling of guides for weekly campus tours, assists gallery director with organization of special tours, and assists with training and recruitment of tour guides.
The Gallery Sales and Information Associate assists gallery customers with purchases, placing orders, and responding to inquiries about Penland affiliated artists. General knowledge about Penland School (history and programs) and craft techniques is necessary; experience with retail sales, packing and shipping is recommended. Professional attire is expected.
This is a part time, benefits exempt, seasonal (March-December) hourly position and reports to the Gallery Director. Work schedule averages 24 hours/week; Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays required; occasional evening hours may be required.
Greets and assists incoming students and instructors, visitors; provides information about Penland School, gallery artists, and local studios to gallery visitors.
Assists gallery customers with purchases and placing orders; responds to inquiries about Penland affiliated artists.
Utilizes inventory software, computer and credit card systems to facilitate gallery sales.
Maintains visitation records, customer database, and mailings lists for school and gallery databases.
Is knowledgeable about Penland history and current programs and is able to conduct tours as needed (training provided).
Serves as primary contact for tour inquiries and guides.
Maintains tour book information, scheduling of guides for weekly campus tours, assists gallery director with organization of special tours, assists with training and recruitment of tour guides. Maintains open line of communicication between other departments in regards to vistiors and tour groups.
Works equally with other staff to keep gallery clean and maintained.
Assists bookkeeper with inventory processing.
Handles packing and shipping of artwork as needed.
Assumes other responsibilities upon request and as may be appropriate to the position.
High school graduate or equivalent and at least 18 years of age. General knowledge of Penland School and practical knowledge of craft media, equipment, tools, materials, and techniques is required. Must be able to interact and converse easily with a wide range of visitors; give information clearly, patiently and politely.
Experience with Mac OSX and functional ease with computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheet and database software is required. Fluency with Microsoft Word and Excel is recommended. Must be able to use a calculator, credit card machine, and handle money with accuracy and ease.
Employee must be able to manage a varied workload, work well independently and under supervision, display emotional maturity, integrity, enthusiasm, self confidence, and a sense of humor. Employee must have strong attention to detail, dependability, and adaptability, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong planning and organizational skills. Must be able to safely and sensibly move and carry gallery items such as pedestals, artwork, boxes and furniture.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and to work at a computer. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls and to talk fluently and to hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and bend. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds or more. Specific vision required by this job includes close vision.
