Teaching Artists Initiative Program Manager

Position Summary

The Program Manager is responsible for managing the programs associated with the Teaching Artists Initiative: the Penland Teaching Artist in the Schools Program; teaching artist training; the Mitchell High Craft Program at Penland; and Penland Kids Camp; as well as assistance with other Community Collaboration initiatives. Adaptability, analysis, attention to detail, collaboration, personal impact, dependability, safety awareness, organizational sensitivity and teamwork are characteristics central to this position. The Program Manager is an administrative, art teaching and services-oriented position, reports to the Manager of Community Collaboration, and is a 30-hour-per-week, year-round, hourly, benefits eligible position.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Programming
Plans and implements Teaching Artists Initiative in collaboration with Penland staff, teaching artists, community and school system personnel.


Works with Penland Teaching Artist in the Schools to coordinate and implement program. Serves as liaison with the schools, scheduling workshops, coordinating evaluation, and facilitating communication among participants.


Assists Penland Teaching Artist in the Schools with hands-on workshops with students as needed.


Schedules photo documentation, and plans open houses and exhibitions.


Collaborates with TAI staff on management of internship positions.


Plans, coordinates and leads collaborative hands-on art programs with community organizations bi-annually.


Assists with coordination of professional development opportunities for teaching artists.


Coordinates Mitchell High School Craft Program in collaboration with TAI staff and high school personnel.


Manages online presence of Subs with SuitCASEs program.


Coordinates planning of Kids Camp, and manages implementation.


Works with program director to strategically tie TAI activities to Penland programming and mission of serving and supporting artists.


Cooperates with efforts to promote the programs. Coordinates with Director of Communications to develop advertising, flyers and press releases.


Works closely with supervisor and development staff to manage multiple grant budgets. Prepares information as requested for Director of Development to use in grant applications and reports.


Represents Penland at arts education meetings.


Assists with preparation 6-month reports for Teaching Artists Initiative.


Other duties as assigned.

 

Studios

Manages usage of Ridgeway classroom.


Works with studio coordinators and program staff to coordinate Mitchell High Craft Program studio usage.

 

Safety
Establishes safety procedures for all Teaching Artists Initiative programs, and ensures that materials and processes are age-appropriate and safe for participants.

 

Budgeting/Ordering/Accounting
Collaborates on development of each year’s TAI budget.


Follows established procedures for requesting purchase authorizations, placing orders for materials, supplies, equipment and repairs for TAI programs and for submitting packing slips, invoices, and bills as soon as possible. Insures that all orders are placed, received, and accounted for properly.


Monitors progress in remaining within budget and gets authorization for ordering supplies or spending over budget.
Works cooperatively with supervisor when adjustments to the budget are necessary.

 

Supplies
Works with program staff to be sure material ordering is within budget and meets safety guidelines.

 

Facilities/Equipment Improvements
Discusses requests for facility improvements and equipment with Deputy Director and Director of Facilities and Grounds. Provides cost estimates, if requested, in a timely manner for the annual budget process.

 

Communication
Attends regularly scheduled meetings with the Manager of Community Collaboration and Program Director and is responsible for any information relayed. Communicates clearly with Penland Teaching Artist concerning program needs and schedules. Provides clear and timely information to all other staff as necessary for issues and concerns involving them.


Serves as an advocate with the community to seek input, to keep them informed of relevant activities, improvements, etc., and to involve them in meaningful and productive ways.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is preferred with at least 3 years of experience with administrative work, program management, and art teaching experience. Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience. Comfort and skill leading hands-on art workshops with children. Sensitivity to partnerships, working with teachers, students, school administrators, and community members. Must possess good organizational skills, the ability to manage a varied workload, good people skills, and the ability to plan and manage a budget. Familiarity with grantwriting and reporting is preferred. Knowledge of computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet and social media applications.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls and to talk fluently and to hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, to walk, and to bend and to handle hazardous materials. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision required by this job includes close vision.
