Support for Penland

The Penland Annual Fund
Support Penland's classes and programs by joining with hundreds of donors who are Penland Friends, contributing each year to the Penland Annual Fund. With your contribution you provide critical support to the studios, the work study scholarship program, studio assistantships, and the resident artists, and core fellows programs. Penland Friends make an annual gift to the school at any level. All Friends receive our newsletter, the Penland Line, the annual report, invitations to gallery exhibit openings, and notices of special events on campus.

Lucy Morgan Leaders
Lucy Morgan Leaders are a special group of Friends who contribute $1,000 or more annually to support Penland's life-changing work in the field of craft education. Named to honor Penland's founder, Lucy Morgan, the Leaders help sustain the work that she began almost eighty years ago and provide important support for innovation and excellence in craft education. Leaders contribute at different gift levels and enjoy special acknowledgment during the year.

 Scholarship Funds
Your annual gifts to Penland help keep tuition affordable for many students and Penland's classes accessible to a diverse student population by providing ongoing support for the work-study scholarship program. In addition, direct scholarship gifts, made either as an annual donation or as an endowment contribution to create a scholarship in perpetuity, support individual students, further expanding access to classes and studios and assuring a diverse student population. Penland offers a variety of scholarship donation opportunities that provide work-study or full scholarships each year. For further information about creating a scholarship at Penland, please contact the development office, 828-765-2359, extensions 14 or 42, or email your questions to development@penland.org.

Work-Study Scholarship Auctions
The night before the close of each Penland session, students, instructors, staff, the Penland community, and other visitors celebrate together the learning, creativity, sharing, and fun that mark the class experience with an auction of contributed student and instructor work. These end-of-session auctions benefit Penland’s work-study scholarship program.. Proceeds from these auctions help Penland provide more than 250 work-study scholarships and 135 studio assistantships each year. Share in the students’ experiences and join us to see student work and enjoy the energy of a Penland session.

Planned Giving--Penland's Circle of Hands
Become part of Penland's Circle of Hands by making a planned gift to the school. Planned gifts provide you with the opportunity to establish a legacy gift to Penland and to assure your continued support of the school to benefit future generations of students. If you are already a Penland Friend or a Lucy Morgan Leader, a planned gift will allow you to assure that your past support will continue and that you lend a hand in providing critical funds for future needs.

The simplest way to be a part of Penland's future is through a bequest to the school, but you may be interested in a gift that provides you with an income for the rest of your life. Making planned gifts can provide a number of advantages, including current and future income tax deductions and effective estate planning options. Gifts may be made in your name or as an honorarium or memorial for another. You may designate specific media interests or programs that you wish to support with your gift.

Be a part of Penland’s future. To share your interest in our Circle of Hands, please call the development office, 828-765-2359, ext. 14 or 42, or email development@penland.org.

Endowment Funds
When you contribute to Penland's endowment, you help assure the future of the school. Current endowments benefit the work-study scholarship program and other scholarship funds, as well as general operations. An outright or planned gift may be designated for an endowed scholarship fund, assuring opportunities for students for many years to come, or to some other broadly designated purpose. If you are interested in endowment opportunities, please contact the development office, 828-765-2359, ext. 14 or 42, or email development@penland.org.

Annual Capital Needs
Maintaining well equipped studios and facilities serves Penland’s students well and supports outstanding instruction and learning. Each year, Penland’s studios and other buildings require upgrades of equipment and infrastructure to assure a high quality educational experience. Your contributions, including in-kind gifts, can directly support these needs. For further information, contact the development office, 828-765-2359, ext. 42 or email development@penland.org.
