Penland Photo of the "Week"

September 27, 2006

Several Penland core students, resident artists, and staff members were part of a residency project with Danish sculptor Nina Hole. Coordinated by the Center for Craft Creativity and Design, the residency took place at Appalachian State University in Boone earlier this month. In addition to the Penland folks, there were students from Appalachian State, UNC-Asheville, Western North Carolina University and Haywood Community College. Under Hole's direction they built this massive, architectural "fire sculpture." It was wrapped in a refractory blanket and fired with wood for several days. The project culminated on September 23, when the sculpture was unwrapped after reaching peak temperature. (Photo: Robin Dreyer)
